Istanbul, “Promised Land”. Evangelical Urban Circuits & Religious Labour in Turkey
This thesis addresses the little known field of Evangelical Churches in Turkey. It discusses the status of global evangelicalism as a ‘religion of mobility’ based on ethnographic research in Istanbul (2013-2017) in churches and among their members.
The extensive survey incorporates a wide variety of Evangelical populations, both indigenous (from Turkey’s Christian minorities, as well as the Muslim majority) and immigrant (from Western countries, as well as from the Global South), in some thirty places of worship. It focuses on the ethno-confessional categorisation of these populations and invisibilisation of Evangelicalism as a religious setting, opposed to their concrete implantation in the city and interdependence. It underlines the major contribution of marginalised communities of faith to the revitalisation and reform of established churches, as well as the urban extension of the circuits of religious practice.
The intensive survey within a ‘mixed’ Pentecostal Church demonstrates the positive articulation between religious (worship & missionary) labour and the institutional elaboration of migration projects in a context of forced immobilisation. I intend to contribute to conceptualise the division of religious labour as an institution of migration, participating in immobilising and/or impelling the migration of religious labour, i.e. putting religious organisations at the heart of individual trajectories.
